Thoughts on Training

  • Before embarking on a training program, visualise clearly in your head what you would like to achieve. Once you have done this, tell an instructor what you would like to achieve and he can design a program more specifically designed to get the results you want more quickly.

  • Consistent effort beats sporadic. Training should become simply a part of your life. Although the program should be updated regularly to allow progress and stop the body from becoming too comfortable with the training, the act of working-out will eventually become a habit if adhered to. Remember, good habits are formed as easily as bad ones.

  • ‘Quality not quantity’ ; the time you spend in the gym is less important than the intensity of what you do. With an intelligent program and the right attitude, 30 mins can reap better results than 2 hours. By the same token, the saying ‘no pain no gain’ may be one of the dumbest statements to come out of the 80’s. Pain is a sign things are being damaged.

  • Everybody is an individual. Whilst some lesser gyms may adopt a basic one-size-fits-all attitude to programs, at Monaghan Leisure Complex, we understand that everybody has different strengths and weakness. People naturally vary in cardiovascular capacity, muscular strength, stamina, emotional intensity, as well as having different fitness goals.

  • ‘A new adventure every month’ ; By working with an instructor, find what works for you, as training will lose its appeal if it is regarded as a ‘duty.’ If however, you are excited and stimulated by the idea of training, you will enjoy, nay, love to train.

  • Be warned though, even experienced trainers can get caught in the ‘stuck-in-a-rut’ pitfall of training, almost without noticing. When training feels like a chore, then, with an instructor, have a look at yourself and begin to reassess your training.

  • Train for yourself and don’t suffer in silence. Training to please others rarely works. If you wish to train but cannot find the motivation, have a quiet chat with one of our instructors. By the same token, if something does not feel right, say so to your instructor. There are alternatives to every exercise.
