ILAM White Flag / Quality Leisure Management / STEM (Sustainable Together through Environmental Management)
Coral Leisure - Monaghan Leisure Complex were last night (18th October 2007) awarded the prestigious ILAM White Flag Award at a ceremony at the Annual ILAM Ireland conference dinner in the Knightsbrook Hotel & Golf Resort in Trim Co. Meath.
The White Flag Award is a Quality award with key criteria classified under a number headings including facility interior, exterior & grounds; staff training and qualifications, disability access and provision, swimming pool hygiene; operations; environmental management; water quality and treatment and education information. Each leisure facility must have safe and easy access, qualified and trained staff, good health & safety procedures, follow industry codes of practice, are also imperative for the White Flag. By following White Flag criteria, making some necessary changes, a leisure facility can reach a very high standard, offering the best possible service, without resorting to major structural changes.
The success of the White Flag Award is clearly demonstrated by the significant increase in both applications and awards. Since the awards inception in 2001, there has been an increase from 28 to 80 awards. The White Flag Award has established itself as the quality mark that all leisure facilities must strive to achieve and is endorsed by Failte Ireland and the Irish Hotels Federation. It is also a mandatory requirement for Health Spas seeking funding from Failte Ireland.
“The White Flag Award is fast becoming an essential mark of quality within the health and leisure industry. A leisure facility can reach a very high standard, offering the best possible service, without resorting to major structural changes. The recent case of Legionnaires in a Donegal hotel spa highlights the need for strict regulations to be enforced to ensure high standards within leisure centres, spas and other facilities. Without legislation to govern such facilities the White Flag Award ensures key criteria are maintained and that high standards are met."
Back in August of this year Coral Leisure - Monaghan Leisure Complex were also awarded the Quality Leisure Management (QLM) Award which qualifies them as an Approved Training Centre for the delivery of the National Pool Lifeguard Qualification. This was awarded following an external verification visit from Charley Ramsey from Edinburgh, Scotland and John Tibby will be commencing courses at the centre soon.
Coral Leisure – Monaghan Leisure Complex were also one of the last companies to get enrolled on the STEM Project. As the project nears completion MLC are proud to have achieved accreditation to BS 8555.
The STEM Project
The STEM Project is a three year project which was established in 2004 and concludes in October 2007. The project is funded by the EU INTERREG IIIA Programme for Ireland/Northern Ireland, nine participating Councils and Southern Group Environmental Health Committee.
A business or organisation will have an impact on our environment regardless of its size. This impact can be controlled and managed by implementing an Environmental Management System (EMS).
MLC Manager’s Comment
Since opening our doors back on 19th August 2006 Coral Leisure’s Monaghan Leisure Complex has gone from strength to strength. This success has been down to the exceptional continued support of the people of Monaghan and neighbouring counties. Add to this the commitment and enthusiasm shown by each of the 32 employees at MLC and it’s not hard to see why we’ve been recognised with these 3 awards. I personally want to thank you the public for your continued support and all my staff who strive to ensure we offer a quality service. Without the vision of Declan Nelson our County Manager we wouldn’t have our state of the art facility, without you our customers we couldn’t stay open and without our team of staff hired by Coral Leisure we couldn’t operate so this clearly is a team venture. Thank you.
