Cross Border Celebration Event in Armagh
Monaghan County Council, Antrim Borough Council and Armagh City & District Council have recognised local small and medium organisations who have participated in the ‘Workplace Health Initiative’ at a “Celebration Event” on 4 June 2008 in Armagh City Hotel.
The Workplace Health Initiative is an innovative pilot project which is working cross-border, involving Antrim Borough Council, Armagh City & District Council and Monaghan County Council. The initiative is part financed by the European Union through the Interreg IIIA Programme managed for the Special EU Programmes Body by East Border Region Interreg IIIA Partnership.
The aim of the Workplace Health Initiative is to offer small and medium organisations free advice and support to develop policies and programs that will promote the health and wellbeing of their employees and lead to improved organisational performance. It is delivered within the three council areas by two workplace health coordinators: Linda Norris and Fiona McKenna.
The event hosted guest speakers from Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland, with Dr Elizabeth Mitchell, DHSSPS and Patricia Murray, HSA providing a government’s and enforcement agency perspective on workplace health issues.
Over 150 organisations within the three council areas have engaged in the Workplace Health Initiative. Three of participating organisations - Cherry Pipes, Armagh, Coral Leisure, Monaghan and St Oliver Plunketts Primary School, Antrim - outlined their organisation’s experiences with the Initiative at the celebration event. David Moore from Coral Leisure, Monaghan said ‘Our organisation’s involvement in the Workplace Health Initiative has helped us to address health and wellbeing issues individually as well as improve overall as an organisation.’
Anne Donaghy, Director of Environmental Services, Antrim Borough Council said, “This Celebration Event has been a fitting way to recognise the initiative that promoted cross border partnership working within the 3 Councils and raised the profile of improving employee health and well being with local businesses.”
Mr Tom French EBR IIIA Partnership was delighted that from a funder’s perspective that “This initiative makes a vital contribution to the business economy”.
Councillor Sean Conlon from Monaghan County Council, Mayor of Armagh Councillor Charles Rollston and Deputy Mayor of Antrim Councillor Oran Keenan attended the event and echoed “The importance of any initiative that aims to assist businesses in their areas promote health and well being of their staff as great way forward of improving the health of the nation”.
