Coral Leisure announce Darragh Greene as their new Brand Ambassador
June 2nd, 2020

Irish international swimmer Darragh Greene is today announced as Brand Ambassador for Coral Leisure Ireland. Having started his swimming career in his local Coral Leisure swimming pool in Longford, Darragh continues to use his local centre as he prepares to compete at Tokyo. Coral Leisure are extremely proud to be supporting Darragh on his journey to the Olympics in 2021 as part of Team Ireland, even recently supplying Darragh with necessary gym equipment to keep his training on track during the Covid 19 restrictions.

Irish family owned Coral Leisure are Ireland’s leading Leisure & Energy Management company managing nine pool & leisure facilities nationwide. In addition to Longford they include facilities in Arklow, Askeaton, Ballinasloe, Cobh, Killarney, Monaghan, Tuam, and Wicklow. Coral Leisure are known for a personable and transparent approach and put great emphasis on building relationships with customers and local community groups.

Nationwide, their enthusiastic and knowledgeable staff pride themselves on delivering real value by providing high quality standards of customer care in a friendly and professional atmosphere. It’s these brand values that Darragh believes in, telling us “I am very much looking forward to being part of the Coral team. They have been such a big part of my junior swimming life as that’s where my training began. They have also been hugely supportive of me as my career has progressed and most recently during the current crisis, providing me with the necessary gym equipment to allow me to continue my training. I am extremely grateful to them and am excited about being able to help the Coral team and their members however I can.”

coral leisure ENERGY champions team TRAINING

2/3/2020

EcoMerit was delighted to contribute to a Coral Leisure training event conducted recently with their Energy Champions Team in Portlaoise.
The training covered the global context for action, barriers and benefits to resource efficiency within Coral Leisure and priorities for action in the coming year.
This training was held at Coral Leisure’s inaugural Energy Champion meeting and marked a huge step in how far this role has come and how valued it is. Each Energy Champion has done invaluable work for their own Centres and it must be recognised and given the regard it deserves. It was the first time that the majority of those in the room met; to see the sharing of ideas, as well as the shared enthusiasm for the role, made the entire day worthwhile.

Environmental consciousness is the future for most businesses, as they can see the multitude of benefits that are associated with a greener view, is it any wonder that giants like Microsoft are declaring that they will be carbon negative by 2030.  If Coral Leisure wants to continue to lead the way in our own industry, then the Energy Champion role must grow and evolve as well, along with the continued partnership and support from Ecomerit.
“Coral Leisure’s main goal was to create a network to allow each Energy Champion in Coral Leisure to take full advantage of each other’s experience, resources, and ideas. We have a great pool of talent across the group and it is a huge benefit to be able to tap into this and help each other.
This was the first step in taking the Energy Champion role in a new direction and giving it the status and respect it deserves.  Thanks to Camillus our “Enthusiastic Energy Engineer” for all his work.
And thanks to Bobby and Christian of Ecomerit for joining us and not only educating but helping to steer us in the right direction.”
Ciarán Murtagh: Area Manager and Coral Energy Team Coordinator

Coral Leisure is fully committed to help reduce our carbon footprint in every way that we can. As such we set out to become an EcoMerit certified company, to ensure we were operating to the highest most energy efficient standards possible

The requirements for achieving EcoMerit certification are that we adhere to certain core requirements
  • An Environmental Policy
  • An Improvement Plan
  • Performance Monitoring System
  • A commitment to pollution prevention

The benefits of being an EcoMerit certified company are many. EcoMerit companies save an average of €8,360 in their first year of certification alone, and over the last ten years have achieved an average 9.2% year-on-year reduction in their carbon emissions.
If Ireland could match this performance, we would comfortably meet our climate change obligations, with a margin to spare.

In the past year alone Coral Leisure  saved 851,500 KW of energy which is the equivalent of 851,500 kettles of water boiled
Or
416 people flying from Dublin to New York!

EcoMerit is about empowering businesses to become more sustainable. They do this by identifying cost-effective savings and improvement opportunities. They give businesses simple tools to help go on improving and saving, year-on-year.
Coral Leisure is unique in that it has its own Energy Saving Champion for the whole group across the country and each centre in the group has its own dedicated energy saving champion on site.
Coral Leisure has committed to making even more changes in the near future, all with the aim of reducing our carbon footprint significantly

coral LEISURE - leading the way in energy management in the leisure industry

“Energy awareness today, Strategies for tomorrow”
If you've ever visited an indoor pool, and enjoyed the year-round warmth of the water, you've probably never even considered the cost of heating a volume of water and air that size.
But as the operators of any pool are aware, the energy costs are amongst the highest costs in running the business.
As such Coral Leisure, in partnership with Limerick County Council, are always trying to reduce the energy costs to ensure the sustainability of Askeaton Pool & Leisure and to reduce our carbon footprint.

Uniquely Coral Leisure has a dedicated Energy Champion for the whole group, and led by this champion, Coral Leisure sought out assistance from ESB Smart Energy Services. Their brief was straightforward, if not simple: find ways to reduce annual energy consumption. This meant cutting usage from 1,200 kWh/m2 to 900 kWh/m2

"Energy is the biggest cost to the Leisure Centre after wages. We create about 4,500 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions every year around the 9 Centres.
Last year we cut that by 400 tonnes and we expect to cut another 400 tonnes this year.
The 4 biggest users of energy are the air circulating fans, the pool circulating water pumps, the sauna/steam room and the lights."

Siobhan Tighe, Managing Director of the Coral Leisure Group, explains what we do "Coral Leisure puts energy and environmental awareness to the forefront of their operations.  We conduct regular energy conservation audits and evaluations of our centres and our Energy Management Strategies are in place across the group. In addition we design and implement relevant site specific solutions, ensuring industry best practice and continuing financial savings to our clients.  We advise on relevant Government grant availability and assist in the application process on your behalf."
In the last year alone Coral Leisure has undertaken projects in every one of the centres aimed at reducing energy costs and increasing energy efficiency. Simple measures like installing new Pool Covers and installing modern energy efficient LED lighting in all centres can make an initial huge difference to energy costs.

Coral Leisure also undertakes more complex projects such as installing Destrat Fans, (which push warm air back down into pool halls keeping heating costs down) and computerised Business Energy Management Systems (which automatically control heating, lighting, pump speeds and air handling depending on the time of day and customer usage levels).
Coral Leisure also believes all of these measures go hand in hand with providing ongoing staff training in the importance of energy saving. This ensures the optimum return on investment on all energy saving projects.
A feature unique to Coral Leisure; each centre has a dedicated Energy Champion who is responsible for taking accurate energy readings on a weekly basis and tracking them, as well as monitoring all equipment so that scheduled maintenance can be carried out on an ongoing basis to maintain the effectiveness of all machinery from an energy saving perspective.

coral leisure centres raised over €20,000 for charity in 2018

18/1/2019

Picture
Each year Coral Leisure chooses a charity to be our Charity Partner for that year. Each of the 9 centres in the Coral Leisure Group nationwide then runs a number of fundraising events over the course of that year with all proceeds going to our chosen partner.

in 2018 Coral Leisure went  in a slightly different direction. As part of the Coral Leisure philosophy, each centre lays down strong roots and integrates fully into our local community, in which we serve. So following on from this philosophy, in 2018 Coral Leisure had not just one Charity Partner, but 10 Charity Partners.

Picture
Each centre in the Coral group, along with our Head Office in Dublin, partnered up with a local cancer support group.
Throughout the year each Coral Leisure centre ran a number of charity fund raising events in their centre and in the local community

All our staff gave up their time and expertise free of charge to organise and run these events , and the members and customers of all 9 Coral Leisure centres enthusiastically got involved in a variety of different events.

Events ranged from charity white collar boxing to 24 hour spin and swim-athons

Picture
The total raised across the Coral Leisure Group nationwide was €20,456 which all goes to local charities. This is a massive achievement and one of which Coral Leisure are very proud of.

Coral Leisure would like to say a big thank you to all of the members and customers, as well as their staff, who contributed to this fantastic effort across the country

Picture
On the back of this success, Coral Leisure has decided to continue into 2019 with the same local charity partners, fund raising for a local cancer support group in each of the 9 Coral Leisure locations along with one in Dublin near our head office. We hope to increase the amount of money raised for these worthy charities again this year.

We look forward to getting as many members and customers involved in our fund raising activities for 2019.  If you have any ideas for events or activities please contact your local Coral Leisure centre to discuss your ideas.
